How
to Make a Sling
Step
1: Obtain Materials Needed for Sling:
2 sling rings
22½" x 2½ yards Fabric
Rings
~ welded steel rings can be purchased at a hardware store in the aisle with
screws and nails. Nylon rings can be purchased from slingrings.com.
The size of the ring depends on the thickness of the fabric used.
Fabric
~ Choose a fabric that is the right weight for the climate and time of year
in which the sling is to be used.
One sling uses half the width of 2½ yards of 45" wide fabric.
The width of the sling can vary by a couple inches without affecting use.
60" fabric can be cut to make three 20" wide slings.

Step
2: Finish the fabric edges.
After cutting the fabric, the edges need to be serged or hemmed.
When using a serger, it is easier and prettier to round the corners.
When making a folded hem, it is easier to leave square corners.

Step
3: Fold pleats in the ring end of the fabric.
The pleats should start from the center and work outward to allow opening
over the shoulder. It is a good idea to do this on a grid mat so they are
even. The pleats should be pinned in place then sewn along the edge.
This is how I fold my pleats:

Step
4: Baste pleats 4 to 5 inches from end of the fabric.

Step
5: Attach rings.
Insert end of fabric through 2 rings. Sew along baste stitch from step
4. Use zig-zag or decorative stitch setting and repeat 2 or 3 times to
ensure stitch will hold well.

The
sling is complete.
To use, feed free end through both rings then back through one ring.

This is
how I make slings for my own use. Please choose fabric that will not tear
easily. Check your stitching before use. Test your sling's strength
and learn to use it correctly from other moms. For the safety of your
child, please do not assume these instructions offer any guarantees.
